Ryōunkaku (controlled demolition with explosives)
Ryōunkaku was built in 1890, during a time when Tokyo was rapidly modernizing. Japan was embracing new technologies and cultural changes, and the tower stood as a symbol of that progress. Standing at 53 meters, it was quite tall for its time, offering panoramic views of the city, and it was a popular tourist attraction. The building featured modern amenities like electric lights and gas lamps, making it a cutting-edge structure for the era.
In 1923, the Kanto Earthquake caused severe damage to the tower, with the upper levels collapsing. To prevent further risk, the military’s engineering corps carried out a controlled demolition, using explosives.

Tokiwa-do
Tokiwa-do is a traditional Japanese confectionery shop established in 1816, during the late Edo period, in the Asakusa area of Tokyo. The shop is well-known for selling Kaminari-okoshi, a sweet made primarily from puffed rice, which is known for its crispy, savory flavor. The name ‘Kaminari-okoshi’ comes from the Kaminari-mon Gate in Asakusa, symbolizing strength, and the snack’s light, airy texture resembles a forceful yet light impact, much like thunder.
Kaminarimon, the famous gate of Sensoji Temple, actually had periods where it was not standing. It was first built in 1912, but in 1919, it was destroyed by a fire. The gate remained absent until 1923. During this time, Kaminarimon was not present.

Soba or Udon
Soba, made from buckwheat flour, is a traditional Japanese noodle dish known for its thin, firm texture. It became particularly popular during the Edo period.
However, despite soba’s popularity, udon, made from wheat flour, was more commonly consumed by the general public. While soba is now widely known and loved in Asakusa, udon was the more popular noodle among the masses at the time.
